Often hidden in plain sight, human trafficking can be hard to recognize. It’s important to know the signs.

A potential victim of human trafficking might be
- Lured into another country by false promises
- Unpaid, paid very little, or paid only on tips
- Working excessively long and/or strange hours
- Malnourished or in poor physical or dental health
- Responding in a scripted or rehearsed manor
- Fearful of police or public authorities
- Exhibiting signs of psychological trauma, physical abuse and injuries
- Limited in their freedom of movement, not allowed to go into public alone, or speak for themselves
- In debt to or in fear of someone
- Lacking legal documents or someone else is in possession of their documents
- Hesitant or even fearful to tell others of their situation, very secretive and have a lack of trust in others
- Lacking personal possessions or appear destitute
- Living at their place of employment
- Showing signs of substance abuse or addiction
- Overly dependent on their employer
- Showing a pattern of going missing often without explanation
